Whee! The great state of South Carolina, first in secession, first in crappy education, first in the hearts of - well, I dunno, but somebody, I'm sure, brings you the newest exciting innovation in nativist wankery:

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - One of the leaders in the South Carolina Senate wants federal lawmakers to call a convention to amend the US Constitution so states could deny benefits and expel illegal immigrants.

Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell says states can do little to stop illegal immigration without some change in the Constitution because the US Congress has done so little on the issue.

Excuse me, that might be because Congress is too busy with all kinds of really important stuff.

Or maybe 'cause Wal-Mart would kick their asses if they cut off their supply of cheap floor-cleaning personnel.
