I see Lindsey Graham is still campaigning for war on Iran:
Speaking at a security conference in Canada [Saturday], Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) took it upon himself to make U.S.-Iran policy, declaring that “Containment is off the table“:
The South Carolina Republican saw the United States going to war with the Islamic republic “not to just neutralize their nuclear program, but to sink their navy, destroy their air force and deliver a decisive blow to the Revolutionary Guard, in other words neuter that regime.”
I mean, WTF does he think we're going to do? Our military is still tied down in two other wars, strategic bombing or even precision bombing won't do the job, and the only resource we have that we haven't already expended is our most excellent crater-makers with the radioactive filling. Using nuclear weapons to deter the nuclear program of another country (if it even exists; I still haven't seen any evidence of an Iranian bomb beyond assertions that they want one) is a route we DON'T want to go down - we've already set noxious precedents in using military assets to fight "terrorism" and for pre-emptive invasions.
But it's not just Graham, now - David Broder, writing for the Washington Post, thinks that war with Iran would be just peachy for the economy:
Here is where Obama is likely to prevail. With strong Republican support in Congress for challenging Iran's ambition to become a nuclear power, he can spend much of 2011 and 2012 orchestrating a showdown with the mullahs. This will help him politically because the opposition party will be urging him on. And as tensions rise and we accelerate preparations for war, the economy will improve.
I am not suggesting, of course, that the president incite a war to get reelected. But the nation will rally around Obama because Iran is the greatest threat to the world in the young century. If he can confront this threat and contain Iran's nuclear ambitions, he will have made the world safer and may be regarded as one of the most successful presidents in history.
Oh, no, he wouldn't suggest Obama attack Iran to get re-elected. But it'd be the best possible thing he could do, is all! And there won't be a town hall meeting to get America on board, unlike his Democratic predecessor. No, President Obama will just be so willing to work in a bipartisan way with the GOP who thinks Park 51 is a "victory mosque" and that Jesus can just create more oil if we use it all that we'll drift slowly into Armageddon. The Fifth Fleet will assemble in the Persian Gulf, Iran will break out the suicide boats and anti-ship missiles, and the next thing we know our forces are going to have to use nuclear weapons just to survive.
Pfaugh. If we listen to Lindsey Graham and David Broder, we pretty much deserve what we'll get.
